Walk Down Memory Lane 🎄

A Christmas message from Steve 🕊️

Walk down memory lane into yesteryear

Mother and Brother headed out to the chicken coop on this snowy December day

We waded through snow and drifts and we stirred chicken feed and hot water to take it out to the chickens for their winter breakfast

They were very happy to see us and thanked us with squalls for their mash

The snow continued to fall all afternoon

It is Christmas Eve and Dad and my brother and I headed to the barn with the lantern

Shadows of large steps, Dad’s steps

In the barn he hung up the lantern and milked the cow

My brother and I played hide and go seek around the milking cow and Dad

The two cats in the barn found their nest under the manger and feed box

The chickens were roosting on the high perch above the hay manger

A few stray sparrows were nestled in the loft, cooing a sweet Christmas Eve lullaby

The flock of ewe and lamb were stalled nearby, with straw and sweet grass

Christmas Day turned out to be a cold wintery snow morning Mother, Dad, and children headed for Grandpa’s house Clip clop, clip clop through the beautiful snow landscape down the beautiful country road

We entered grandma’s kitchen – she was excited for the cousins

Grandma’s kitchen had a hand pump – a dry sink, no running water

The pot bellied stove was in the parlor, tender and wood, warming the parlor, you could see flames through the grate

More uncles and aunts were coming to Grandpa’s home – a true sense of Christmas, a family gathering

Grandma’s potatoes were delicious – mashed, with brown butter, sprinkled with homemade crackers on top

She took us down into the depths of memory lane

They dried peas and corn on a flat roof when she was a girl – she still served dried peas and corn today

With homemade butter and cookies and cake – the best end dinner

The Christmas after dinner, we all gathered in the big parlor, singing Christmas carols, exchanging small valuable gifts

It was time to leave too soon, we had to go do evening chores

The one horse open sleigh cut along the roadway, silent, a faint thud thud instead of the usual clip clop

How we enjoyed the ride home, laughing on Christmas Day!

Next week there was no school and the following afternoon the old steam engine came – chug chug WHOO, down the road, pushing drifts, pushing snow, he stopped at our house for hot chocolate and mother’s best date cookies

My brother and I were allowed to pull the rope for the whistle – whoo whoo!

Evening came, nightfall, we had games in the evening before the warm comforting bed – mother’s kindness and warmth filled the home

New Christmases come and go, but memory lane – yesteryear – remains

This year we will tell all the pets that their name is “Blizzard.” There will not be a spring without winter, so Merry Christmas to all the Blizzards.

Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright

In his care, Steve.
